India’s women’s cricket team fell to the penultimate hurdle as Australia recorded their seventh consecutive final appearance for the Women’s T20 World Cup. Despite a disappointing field performance, India fared well with the bat in stages to come close to Australia’s total of 172 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues kept India’s hopes alive before the skipper walked away in the most bizarre way. When Harmanpreet was asked about her firing, she admitted there couldn’t be a more “unfortunate” way to be fired.
It was the 15th over of India’s chase with Harmapreet keeping the team afloat. During the 4th episode of the over, Harmanpreet’s bat got stuck in the ground while running. The batter was found just inches from her crease when the bail came loose.
The incident changed the momentum of the game, with Australia taking the lead.
Speaking of the incident, Harmanpreet said she couldn’t have been more unhappy.
“I couldn’t be unluckier than this, to get that momentum back when me and Jemi were batting. And to lose after that, we didn’t expect that today. The way I got a runout couldn’t be more unlucky than that. Putting in the effort was more important. We discussed fighting to the last ball. We didn’t like the result, but I’m happy with the way we played in this tournament. We know we have a good batting line-up even if we are losing early wickets,” she said.
Harmanpreet also credited Jemimah Rodrigues for her performance where she quickly scored 43 for 24.
“Have to give credit to Jemi for the way she hit today. She gave us the momentum we were looking for. Glad to see performances like that. Glad to see them play their natural game. We didn’t play to our strong points ,,We have reached the semi-finals”, said the captain of India.
At the end, Harmanpree also confessed that India was poor in the field.
“We gave away those easy catches. We have to take them if you want to win. We did wrong. We can only learn from these lessons and not repeat the mistakes,” she concluded.
