Sensex today: Stocks took a hit in the early hours of Thursday as weak global sentiment amid escalating war concerns in the Middle East kept investors on the sidelines.
The S&P BSE Sensex fell 474 points to settle at 65,403 levels, while the Nifty50 opened below 19,550 points.
Wipro, Hindalco, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Power Grid, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Titan, UPL, Grasim, Adani Ports, HDFC Bank, M&M and L&T lost ground on the stock markets with a decline of up to 3 percent.
Meanwhile, in the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices fell 0.7 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.
Amid broad selling, the Nifty Metal index fell 1.5 percent, Nifty Realty 1.24 percent and Nifty Financial Services 0.8 percent.
Global signals
In Asia, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.33 percent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.42 percent, South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.62 percent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 1.65 percent.
Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.98 percent, the S&P 500 fell 1.34 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.62 percent.
U.S. Treasury yields rose to a multi-year high, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising above 4.9 percent for the first time since 2007.
