Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has raised questions about beef in catering technology and hotel management exam, raising concerns. The question sheet asked a question to ‘write a classification of beef. To define.’ It also asked for an explanation of the cooking technologies of beef. This did not go down well with some of the students who have questioned teaching cow meet in the varsity.
In particular, the cow is a sacred animal in Hindu religion, and many argue that the question is not fair and sensitive to Hindu culture and norms. Students also argue that since university founders championed animal rights, especially for cows, these questions hurt their feelings.
The student group demands clarification and demands an investigation against the author of the question letter. A group of students submitted a memorandum to the clerk after an exam question about beef.
“The question came from the curriculum of the Horeca Technology & Hotel Management course. It is unfortunate that controversy is arising,” the varsity spokesperson said in an official statement.
Meanwhile, an LLM student from BHU died by suicide. Before he died, he had left a status on his WhatsApp that read: “Goodbye everyone..sorry to say.”
Last month, the MA History Question asked BHU students to name the book and the author who mentions ‘demolition of Adi Vishweshwar Temple by Aurangzeb’. The question was asked at a time when the case related to Gyanvapi Mosque – Adi Vishweshwar Temple dispute is still pending in court.
