Canada is about to implement new regulations governing off-campus working hours for international students, aiming to strike a balance between academic focus and employment.
The policy change, announced by Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, will mean the end of the temporary allowance for students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus on April 30, 2024. Instead, students will be allowed to work a maximum of 24 hours per week from this fall.

“By working off campus, international students can gain work experience and offset some of their costs. As international students arrive in Canada, we want them to be prepared for life here and have the support they need to succeed.
“However, first and foremost, people who come to Canada as students should be here to study, not to work. We will continue to work to protect the integrity of our student program,” Miller said in a statement.

In a press statement, the Government of Canada said that students who come to Canada must study. By allowing students to work a maximum of 24 hours per week, they ensure that they can primarily concentrate on their studies, while having the opportunity to work if necessary.

“Students on a scheduled academic break may continue to work unlimited hours during the summer session. These policy changes were made citing student needs, policies in other countries, and research findings, as it is noted that “academic outcomes suffer the more a student works during his studies.”
The new changes aim to strike an appropriate balance between academia and working life, so that students are open to the opportunity to work when necessary, without compromising academic results, the statement said. Miller.
