A 17-year-old male student, who was preparing for the JEE-Mains exam, reportedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan of his hostel room in Kota, Rajasthan, police said on Monday.
The incident took place at Mahaveer Nagar Police Station in Kota on Sunday evening and according to information received by the police, the teenager did not attend any classes for about a month before committing suicide.
“The deceased boy was a one-year dropper in JEE-Mains and had not attended any coaching classes for about a month,” said Sub-Inspector Awadhesh Singh.

He said that on Sunday evening, when the boy failed to open the door of his room, the hostel’s caretaker informed the police.
“Police rushed to the scene and broke down the door and found the boy hanging from the ceiling fan,” Singh said.
The late boy passed class 12 and had failed attempt for JEE-Mains and later in July last year, he enrolled in a coaching institute in Kota.
“The boy reportedly hadn’t taken any coaching classes for about a month,” said Singh.
He said the reason behind the student’s extreme step is yet to be determined as no suicide note has been taken from his room.
“The body was placed in the New Medical College Hospital mortuary for post-mortem upon arrival of his relatives,” he said.
In Kota, the center of coaching centers that prepare students for technical and medical entrance exams, at least 15 students died by suicide in 2022.
