Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to a report by the World Intellectual Property Organization by saying that the increase in patent applications in India shows the growing inventive spirit of the country’s youth and is a very good indication of the coming years. According to the WIPO report, the number of patent applications filed by Indian citizens increased by 31.6 percent in 2022, maintaining an 11-year growth trend unmatched by any other country in the top ten filers.

The countries with the most patent applications in 2022 were China, the US, Japan, South Korea and Germany, according to the report. India’s rise was noted while China’s growth fell for the second year in a row, from 6.8 percent in 2021 to 3.1 percent in 2022, even as the country’s inventors still file about half of all patent applications worldwide.
By 2022, an expected 11.8 million trademark applications will have been filed worldwide, covering 15.5 million classes. It was the first annual decline in the number of classes listed in applications since 2009, down 14.5 percent.
Across 152 IP offices worldwide, there were an expected 82.5 million active trademark registrations, an increase of 9.4 percent compared to 2021. With approximately 42.7 million, China remained the country with the largest number of active trademark registrations in 2022. The US , with 3.1 million active registrations, and India, with about 2.9 million, came next.
