The State Bank of India (SBI) recently introduced new rules stating that if a female candidate is pregnant for more than three months, the candidate will be considered “temporarily unfit”. It further said that the candidate will then be able to join the bank four months after delivery. Following this, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) sent a notice to SBI on January 29 on Saturday requesting that it withdraw the new rules and issue a to request a response.
DCW chairman Swati Maliwal criticized the move, saying the rule appeared discriminatory and illegal. The chairman took to Twitter, saying the move violates maternity benefits under the 2020 Code of Social Security, adding that the rules are discriminatory on the basis of gender, thus infringing fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution. .
The State Bank of India appears to have issued guidelines prohibiting women who are more than 3 months pregnant from enlisting and labeling them as ‘temporarily unfit’. This is both discriminatory and illegal. We have sent them a notice asking them to withdraw this anti-women rule. pic.twitter.com/mUtpoCHCWq— Swati Maliwal (@SwatiJaiHind) January 29, 2022
The DCW has asked the SBI to change the rules that do not discriminate against female candidates. The panel also instructed it to list the process by which the guidelines were formed, and the names and designations of the approving authorities. The commission has instructed the State Bank of India to respond to the message by February 1, as reported by The Hindu.
