Teacher’s Day is upon us, but the state of the country’s teachers is questionable. We keep seeing cases where teachers get beat up, so the question arises whether teachers are really respected in society these days? To better understand it, here is a list of incidents of cruelty to teachers that have occurred in the recent past:
1. Jharkhand students tie teacher, clerk to tree, beat them up
Students from a school in Jharkhand were angry over the results of the 9th class practical exam and allegedly assaulted a teacher and two school staff. The incident was reported from Dumka district. The furious students of Gopikandar Pahadiya Awasiya School tied a teacher Kumar Suman, head clerk Lipik Suniram Chore and Achinto Kumar Mallik to a mango tree and beat them. It was learned that 11 of the 36 students had failed the practical exam.
After the results were announced, the students attacked the math teacher and two staff members. Kumar Suman is said to have suffered injuries. Later, senior officials and police went to the school and the situation was brought under control. The accused students have been expelled.
2. Female teacher stripped and flogged in West Bengal for disciplining student
In a shocking incident, a mob beat and disrobed a female teacher at a school in South Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The crowd was led by the parents of a female student. The teacher allegedly scolded the student for not studying.
The crowd first gathered outside the principal’s office at Trimohini Pratap Chandra High School. They then entered the teachers’ common room where the attack took place. A video of the assault also went viral on social media. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident. The hijab reportedly came off the student when the teacher tugged at her ears.

3. Teacher attacked by relatives of student in Delhi
The teacher allegedly beat a class 8 student on the grounds of “indiscipline”. The student’s grandmother, his uncle and two of his friends entered the school where both parties argued and allegedly attacked the teacher. The police have arrested the three people.
After the teacher at the government school in northeast Delhi was allegedly attacked by relatives of a student, the Directorate of Education (DoE) ordered schools to further tighten access for visitors.
4. Teacher beat up by students for asking not to use cell phone in class
A teacher at a government school in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh was allegedly beaten up by some students after telling them not to use a cell phone in class. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera. The victim has been identified as Sayyad Wasiq Ali, a computer teacher at a government school in the city of Gorakhpur. A 9th grade student, along with two other students, covered Wasiq’s face with a black cloth and attacked him after telling them to stop using cellphones.
On the basis of a written complaint submitted by Wasiq, a complaint was filed against one named and two unidentified students. The said suspect has been arrested. Later he was sent to a youth home. He was taken out of the school. Meanwhile, a police officer said the suspects have been tried for attempted murder. The said suspect has been sent to a youth home while efforts are being made to identify and arrest the other two suspects.
