The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a letter to fill vacant faculty positions in state universities and affiliated colleges. In a letter addressed to the higher education secretaries and councils of all states and territories of the Union, UGC Secretary Prof. Manish R. Joshi stressed the importance of teachers and professors in the education system. The letter emphasizes that universities should prioritize hiring qualified faculty members to ensure students receive a top-notch education.
“You will understand that the most important factor in the success of higher education institutions is the quality commitment of the faculty members, as they are the pillars of all academic processes. They are considered to have the crucial responsibility for creating a conducive learning environment in the institution, developing programme-specific curricula, effectively implementing learning and assessment processes in education, and developing students as responsible members of society,” said the official letter.
It further stated that higher education institutions are encouraged to make an effort to recruit enthusiastic, dynamic and skilled faculty members who can provide students with a high-quality education.
The secretary further expressed concern about the impact of the shortage of teachers in colleges and universities on the teaching and learning process. The note emphasized the urgent need for the timely recruitment of eligible and competent faculty members and urged Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to take the necessary measures for the prompt appointment of professors.
In addition, it discussed the importance of quickly filling vacant faculty positions with eligible and competent candidates, and stated that necessary action should be taken without delay.
The official letter stated that the University Grants Commission has already issued the 2008 UGC regulations. These regulations outline the minimum qualifications, eligibility criteria, and terms of service for faculty members at universities and colleges. Full regulations can be found on the UGC website.
The UGC secretary also pushed for personal intervention to expedite the recruitment process for qualified faculty members at state universities and affiliated colleges. The letter recognized the vital role this plays in improving the quality of higher education and stressed the need for cooperation from the respective states and territories of the Union. “This will make a major contribution to improving the quality of higher education in our country. I request your cooperation in this matter,” it concluded.
