As maximum temperatures are above normal in several parts of India, the Puducherry Public Works Department (PWD) has come up with an innovative solution to combat the intense heat wave. The department has installed green shade nets at traffic signals to provide relief to commuters waiting in the sweltering heat.
An X user shared the video of the initiative and praised the authorities for their efforts. In the video you see people on two-wheelers waiting in the shade until the signal turns green. The clip further shows that similar shade clothing has also been installed at other signals, benefiting several commuters.

Internet users applauded the thoughtful initiative, with many calling it “good” and “excellent.” Several users from other states urged local authorities to take inspiration from Puducherry and implement similar systems in their cities.
One user wrote: 'See there's a trick there. The shadow stops about 3 meters before the zebra crossing. To avoid the scorching sun, drivers will not stop pedestrians.”
Another said: 'Excellent and hats off to the government. I hope it inspires many leaders and administrators.”
A third added: ''Please think about this in Hyderabad and help riders in this hot summer where the temperature reaches 45⁰.''
A fourth said, “What a wonderful initiative by Puducherry Public Works Department! Placing a shaded structure at a busy intersection is a simple yet impactful way to improve the daily lives of residents and commuters. In the sweltering heat, having a place where you can take a break from the sun's relentless rays can make a big difference, both in terms of physical comfort and general well-being.”
Notably, heat waves prevailed in most parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching between 38 and 42.5 degrees Celsius in many places. The regional meteorological department has predicted that the heat wave will continue in the state for the next three days.
Heat wave is prevailing in many districts of the state and the weather department has warned people not to step outside between 12 noon and 3 pm. People should be extremely careful during such situations, authorities say. There is a chance that people will suffer from sunburn and heatstroke, the statement said.
