Social media trends can take off in the blink of an eye. In recent months, many such trends in the form of challenges – skip challenge, dating trend, off limits challenge – have gone viral among users. But now a purple-colored milkshake offered by fast food chain McDonald’s has caught the attention of TikTok users. The Grimace Shake was launched to celebrate the birthday of a popular character who appears in McDonald’s commercials. Known as Ronald McDonald’s best friend, he was introduced as an evil character named Evil Grimace who stole people’s shakes.
But the shake hasn’t gone viral because of its taste or unique color. Instead, TikTok users post videos of people drinking the shake and immediately seen covered in the drink, as if they were murdered, passed out, or possessed.
While these videos were originally posted on TikTok, they have also appeared on Twitter and other social media platforms.
Last week, a TikTok user posted a video with the hashtag #grimaceshake, which according to Today. It shows the teenage passenger taking a sip of the shake and then going to a staged crime scene, with the shake spilled everywhere and the teen lying on the floor.

The creativity of these users is not only amazing, but horrific.
Most of these users who try the shake are presented with their mouths open, presumably dead or dying and covered in lilac goop. The trend has essentially become mini-horror movies centered around the Grimace shake.

Reaction to the trend ranged from amusement to confusion.
“I hope they catch the grimal,” commented one user. “I don’t understand this trend, but it’s hilarious,” said another.
McDonald’s has not issued any official statement about the TikTok trend so far. But Grimace has taken over all of McDonald’s social media accounts.
In a tweet on Tuesday, McDonald’s posted a photo of the purple monster along with the tweet “pretend I don’t see the grimace shake trendd.”
