New Delhi:
The Supreme Court on Friday granted protection from arrest to actress Sherlyn Chopra in a pornographic racket case.
A bench of Judges Vineet Saran and Aniruddha Bose has notified the government of Maharashtra of the appeal filed by Ms Chopra against a Bombay Supreme Court order rejecting her anticipatory bail.
“Notice… In the meantime, no coercive measures will be taken against the petitioner,” the bank said.
Lawyer Sunil Fernandes, who appears before Ms Chopra, argued that other suspects in the case have already received protection.
Ms Chopra has been lined up as an accused in the FIR along with actor Poonam Pandey. Ms. Pandey was granted protection from arrest by the Supreme Court on January 18. The Supreme Court had rejected her anticipatory bail request on November 25, 2021.
In December, the highest court granted Raj Kundra protection from arrest in connection with an FIR registered against him for allegedly distributing pornographic videos.
Kundra was tried under certain sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Indecent Women Act (Prevention) and the Information Technology Act, for allegedly distributing/sending sexually explicit videos.
Fearing arrest, Mr Kundra first requested anticipatory bail from the trial court, but this was denied. He then moved the Supreme Court, claiming he was framed.
