Assam Congress MP accused Prime Minister of making joint statements
Guwahati:
A court in Guwahati has ordered police to file a case against Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, for allegedly saying that last year’s eviction in Garukhuti village in Darrang district was an “act of revenge”.
The court’s designation came on the basis of a petition filed by Abdul Khaleque, MP from Congress Lok Sabha. In his complaint, the Congress MP said Mr Sarma had stated that the evacuation drill in Gorukhuti in Darang district was “revenge” for the 1983 incidents – when several youths were killed there during the Assam riot.
Mr Khaleque had approached the court of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, alleging that the police had done nothing after the Dispur Police Station failed to register an FIR against the Chief Minister.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Biswadeep Baruah, in his order dated Saturday, a copy of which is available from DailyExpertNews, has instructed the Dispur Police Station to register the complaint against Mr. Sarma.
“The OC (Commander in Chief) Police Station of Dispur has been instructed to register a case on the allegations mentioned in the complaint, investigate the case fairly and submit the final form as soon as possible,” the court said. command.
“The police had failed in their duties by failing to register the FIR. The veracity of the allegations cannot be investigated prior to the registration of the FIR. By failing to register even the FIR, it appears that the police have failed in the performance of its duty.” it added.
The Assam government’s eviction in Darrang district aimed at removing “illegal attackers” had turned violent and two people, including a 12-year-old, were killed.
The Assam Congress MP in his complaint accused the prime minister of making communal statements against a particular community, while justifying the eviction drive that left more than 7,000 people homeless.
“The eviction action showed ‘brutal murders’ and houses ‘burnt to the ground’. By labeling the horrific acts (killing of two civilians) as revenge, Sarma not only has the murders and arson committed there, of which the legality has been brought before the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court, justified, but he has gone a long way and has communitarianized the whole exercise, the target of which was the Muslim population living there,” Mr Khaleque stated in his complaint.
When asked about the development, a senior Assam police officer told DailyExpertNews that they are investigating the court order.
