RPN Singh, one of the most prominent leaders of Congress in Uttar Pradesh, resigned from the party on Tuesday and joined the BJP for next month’s elections in the state. He will likely contest the UP polls from his stronghold of Padrauna, from which he has been elected an MLA three times.
“I have been in one party for 32 years, but today I have to say that party is not what it used to be. Nowadays everyone knows that if there is one party that works in the interest of the people and works for the building of the nation , it’s the BJP,” RPN Singh told reporters this afternoon. On stage with him was Jyotiraditya Scindia, who took the route from Congress to the BJP in 2020.

Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Punjab and Uttarakhand will vote on seven stages from February 10, and the vote counting is scheduled for March 10.
A total of 690 constituencies will vote in the next two months, with the maximum in UP (403 seats), followed by Punjab (117), Uttarakhand (70), Manipur (60) and Goa (40).

After the departure of former Union Minister RPN Singh from Congress and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Barkagaon Amba Prasad’s Jharkhand Congress MLA alleged that Singh had conspired with the BJP for over a year to form the Congress-JMM ( Jharkhand Mukti Morcha). government in Jharkhand.
“The party leadership was also often warned about this. Any real congressman from Jharkhand is happy to go to the BJP,” Ms Prasad wrote on her official Twitter handle.
Notably, RPN Singh was the AICC in charge of Jharkhand until the time he tendered his resignation.
Ahead of the Uttarakhand assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Madan Kaushik submitted his nomination papers on Tuesday.
He was accompanied by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, cabinet minister Swami Yatishwaranand.
Earlier on January 20, BJP had announced that Kaushik will fight against Haridwar in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Mr Kaushik is a four-time MLA of Haridwar constituency.
The party has so far announced the names of the candidates for 59 of the 70 seats in Uttarakhand for the upcoming election polls.
The BJP has settled Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami from Khatima.
