Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said there are many people from backward communities and classes who have not yet been included in the mainstream. He has put himself forward for a caste census in the country.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister was addressing a gathering at a meeting organized by Balraj Kundu, an independent legislator, who represents Meham in the Haryana Assembly.
A few months ago, Mr Kundu launched his own outfit Haryana Jansewak Party. The development comes ahead of next year’s assembly elections in Haryana, where the BJP-JJP coalition is in power.
Mr Yadav said his party will continue to work to ensure that people from backward communities and classes get their rights and respect.
“We assure you that today the entire country wants a caste census because after so many years of independence there are many backward people whose counting was not possible and we could not bring them into the mainstream,” the Samajwadi said Party (SP). the president said.
“There are many castes in the country that do not have any identification. That is why a voice that once sounded from Uttar Pradesh (before a caste census) is now being heard in Bihar too. We know that the people of Haryana want this too. census),” he said.
He said his party will ensure caste census in the country after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections so that people get their rights and due respect.
The Congress has also demanded a caste census and promised to conduct the survey if the Center comes to power. The Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) government in Bihar has already released the findings of its caste survey, months ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections.
Mr Yadav also spoke out against the Centre’s Agniveer scheme for recruitment of soldiers. In the SP’s Lok Sabha manifesto, the party promises to end the scheme, he said.
“I want to say this to you as the youth of Haryana join as Agniveers. I want to tell them that when the Samajwadi Party gets a chance to come to power, we assure you that during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the first promise in the Samajwadi Party’s poll manifesto will be to abolish the Agniveer system end and restore the previous recruitment system,” Mr Yadav said.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela, among others, were also present on the occasion.
