Hyderabad:
BRS leader K Kavitha on Thursday announced her decision to hold a one-day hunger strike in New Delhi on March 10 to push for the passage of the women’s reservation law during the current session of parliament.
At a press conference here, Kavitha, daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, announced a peaceful sit-down protest under the auspices of Bharat Jagruthi, an NGO, which has supported the tabling of the women’s reservation bill in parliament. demanded.
“As a sign of protest, Bharat Jagruthi will hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on March 10. We invite women’s organizations and various political parties in 29 states. We invite everyone who believes in women’s empowerment, as much as we do , ‘she said.
She noted that the women’s reservation bill, which aims for 33 percent representation of women in parliament and assemblies, is still pending 27 years after it was first enacted in 1996. on the reports.
The bill, which aims to reserve one-third of the seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assemblies, was first introduced in 1996. Subsequently, it was introduced several times. The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha in 2010 but lapsed after the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha in 2014.
Any bill pending in Lok Sabha expires with the dissolution of the House. Accounts pending in Rajya Sabha are placed in the “live register” and remain pending.
“If we want to grow on an equal footing with other countries, we demand that the Women’s Reservation Bill be introduced during this session of parliament. We feel that political empowerment is a critical aspect of women’s empowerment. Everyone talks, but no one protests to the ground. We want to do it for the women and we are committed to it,” the BRS MLC said.
Referring to the BJP manifesto of the 2014 and 2019 general elections, the former MP said that the Saffron Party did not act on it. “Now at least you (BJP) must act on it and ensure that the women’s reservation bill is tabled in this parliamentary session or the next,” she urged.
She took a closer look at the prime minister and said that Narendra Modi speaks of “Nari Shakti” from the Red Fort but does nothing for women’s empowerment, which the country has now achieved.
Given the BJP’s majority in parliament, if they could pass the three agricultural bills (the controversial agrarian reform bills that were later repealed), they can certainly push for and pass the women’s reservation bill, if they are willing are doing the same. , Kavitha remarked. “It’s easy for them. But they’re not willing to do it. They don’t want women to come forward. That’s the message we’re getting from Narendra Modiji.” On the BRS view on the issue of women’s reservation law, she said that the BRS party, headed by Chief Minister KCR, passed a resolution in the Telangana assembly stating that when Lok Sabha passes the bill approves, the BRS will support It.
The CM also proposed an alternative solution, proposing a 33 percent increase in the number of parliamentary seats to accommodate women to address the insecurities of leaders and parties and pave the way for the soft endorsement of the Women’s Reservation Bill, she remembered.
Kavitha denounced the BJP-led center on governance, saying that when someone reminds the saffron party of its “failures”, suddenly all the institutions are activated against that voice, but why are they silent despite several reports on Adani issues.
“Were LPG rates raised to divert attention from Adani’s problem?” she asked.
“Curbing the flow of information, freedom and freedom of expression is the sad reality of India under the BJP today. There is an opinion across the country today that there is an undeclared emergency in this country,” she claimed in response to a question.
She reiterated that BRS has always demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (GPC) to investigate the Adani group issue.
Kavitha praised the Supreme Court’s ruling on the appointment of election commissioners.
“I believe the Election Commission has been freed from the clutches of BJP and Narendra Modi. There was a strong message that it was not functioning independently, looking at different agencies. I hope the order of the court will be complied with,” she said.
The BRS leader asked the Congress party to shake off its “arrogance” and then talk to everyone (other political parties) about the election strategy if it wants to oust the BJP from power in 2024.
“We are excited and we are talking to all political parties and are determined to oust the BJP in 2024. If that is Congress’ intent, let them work, let them come up with a strategy, and we’ll see,” she added.
