New Delhi:
On New Year’s Eve, Delhi saw a major spike in coronavirus cases with 1,796 new infections – a huge 36 percent increase compared to Thursday’s cases (1,313). The rise in cases across the country is believed to be caused by Omicron.
Today’s rise in the city is the largest daily jump in seven months. The new variant is gradually spreading in the community and has been found in 54 percent of the latest samples analyzed in Delhi, state health minister Satyendar Jain said on Thursday.
The troubling details come as the government of Arvind Kejriwal attempts to enforce strict curb appeal across the national capital, including a ban on New Year’s Eve gatherings and events. Schools and cinemas have also been closed again under the “yellow warning”. The positivity rate stands at 2.44 percent.

The 1,270 cases have so far been discovered in 23 states and Union Territories, and 374 people have recovered or migrated.
