Chennai:
A former assistant professor, Nirmala Devi, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Tamil Nadu court for soliciting sexual favors from female students from university officials.
The court's verdict on Monday found her guilty under five sections, including attempt to traffic four women, and imposed a fine of Rs 2.4 lakh. Two others, including a male university lecturer, were acquitted in the case.
Nirmala Devi, who worked at Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai, was arrested in 2018 after the circulation of a recorded telephone conversation in which she tacitly asked students to provide sexual favors to college authorities.
The incident sparked a significant controversy due to Raj Bhavan's involvement. The then governor, Banwarilal Purohit, quickly dismissed the allegations.
