I have decided to work for the common man as per the ideology of the BJP, said Ujjwal Nikam (File)
Advocate Ujjwal Nikam, who has been appointed by the BJP from the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat, on Saturday said the process of extraditing suspects to the country was long and expensive and stressed the need to resolve the issue.
Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of his campaign, Ujjwal Nikam also said that the foray into politics was the second innings of his life and called it a step from the court to that of the people.
“Extradition is a long and expensive process. Foreign courts decide on extradition based on their law after reviewing and evaluating our evidence. This must be overcome. I am studying the matter and will speak more on it,” he said.
The lawyer-turned-politician hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he had raised India's status in the world and had plans to roll out several welfare programs apart from massive improvements in infrastructure.
“I previously worked at the court. Now I have decided to work for the common man as per the ideology of the BJP. I joined politics because through it you can do a lot of good for the common man, like Prime Minister Modi has done in the last decade,” he claimed.
“I am only ten days old in politics. So initially it was difficult, but after seeing the love and affection that the common man has for the Prime Minister, I know they (people) are looking at me to represent them in the next Modi government.” Ujjwal Nikam claimed.
Responding to criticism from some quarters over some provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which will replace the Indian Penal Code and come into effect from July 1, as being draconian, Ujjwal Nikam said he would express his views after being elected, adding that “certain provisions need more attention”.
Ujjwal Nikam said he toured the constituency and studied the geographical and other issues, asserting that rehabilitation of slums near the airport is a need that needs to be resolved quickly.
“I am getting great response because of the love people have for the Prime Minister,” Ujjwal Nikam said.
