The establishment of a special police unit to combat online child sexual exploitation in Kerala serves as a model that should be replicated internationally, Robert Leventhal, Head of Global Policy and Programs Division, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement of the United States Department of State Affairs said on Saturday.
Speaking at a session on tackling online facilitated sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children at cOcOn, an international hacking and cyber security conference organized by the Kerala Police in Kochi, Mr Leventhal said complementing awareness and robust enforcement is a powerful tool to deter online abuse and promote justice for victims.
He urged stakeholders to modernize and strengthen international standards to counter and prevent child sexual exploitation and abuse.
“Online sexual exploitation and abuse of children is such a significant problem, and the most vulnerable among us deserve our utmost efforts to protect them,” he said, adding that cybercrime and cybercrime pose a significant and growing threat to the national and economic security. of our individual countries.
He said estimates predict the cost of global cybercrime will rise 15 percent per year over the next five years, reaching $10.5 trillion per year by 2025.
“The work of the Kerala Police to develop a special police unit to counter the online sexual exploitation of children in the state is a great example of what we need to see more of on a global scale,” he added during his speech.
