Jamshedpur, Jharkhand:
The prime suspect in the murder of notorious gangster Ranjit Singh outside a Durga Puja pandal in Jamshedpur in Jharkhand has been arrested today, police said.
Sarabjeet Singh aka Chaboo, a resident of the Gurdaspur district of Punjab, was arrested in the city, said Chief Inspector of Police (East Singhbhum district) Prabhat Kumar.
The murder was the result of enmity between the two in prison, he said.
Ranjit Singh, a member of the Amarnath Singh gang, had once pulled Sarabjit’s beard while they were both in prison, the officer said.
“Since the beard is an important religious symbol of the Sikh community, it hurt Sarabjeet Singh’s feelings and plotted the murder of Ranjeet Singh after both were released from prison,” he said.
Ranjit Singh was shot dead while visiting a Durga Puja pandal in the Telco area of the city with his daughter on Oct. 3, police said.
Police had previously arrested two people in connection with the murder, the officer said.
A fourth suspect who is on the run is being sought, he said.
Two rifles and a motorcycle used in the crime have been recovered, he added.
Ranjit Singh had several criminal cases against him including murder and some under the gun law. Sarabjeet Singh is also undertrial in several cases, police said.
