patna:
The man, who attacked Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar two days ago, has been admitted to a hospital for psychiatric treatment, a senior police official here said on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Patna, Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said the attacker has been transferred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), the state’s largest public health facility.
“We have conducted a thorough investigation. Neither the attacker nor any of his relatives have a criminal record. According to the instructions, he was first examined in a health center, after which he undergoes psychological profiling at the PMCH by specialists in the field,” said Dhillon to reporters.
The 32-year-old man had attacked the prime minister in Bakhtiyarpur on the outskirts of the city on Sunday and was immediately overpowered by security personnel on duty.
The prime minister immediately asked security guards not to beat up the attacker and to try to find out what was wrong with him.
The district administration subsequently released a statement revealing that the attacker was a local resident who had twice attempted suicide and whose mental condition had led to his wife living separately with their children.
The government had also stated that the Chief Minister had ordered “no punitive action” against the attacker and to ensure his psychiatric rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav insisted that the “security flaw” was indicative of the general law and order situation.
“It is undoubtedly a regrettable episode. But you can imagine how safe an ordinary man can feel when the Prime Minister himself is not safe,” Yadav commented sarcastically.
