Morena (MP):
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday said her party is based on the principles of Hinduism, the cornerstone of which is truth.
She said at a Lok Sabha poll meeting in Madhya Pradesh's Morena that the ruling dispensation was using religion to garner votes.
“Our tradition is of mahatmas (saints). Our political foundation (the Congress) was laid by Mahatma Gandhi, who fought against the British. The Congress is based on what the Hindu religion teaches. Mahatma Gandhi taught us to walk the path of truth,” she said.
India became independent because of this truth and the religion of the party in power should serve the nation and its people, she asserted.
“This is our tradition. But in the last decade, you have been collecting votes in the name of religion to stay in power,” she said in a swipe at the BJP.
Claiming that every citizen was religious, the Congress leader said her grandmother Indira Gandhi taught her how to do that pujaadding that she went to the temple with her father, late Rajiv Gandhi.
“My mother (Sonia Gandhi) learned these traditions of the country. She taught me what the Hindu religion is. The Hindu religion is the truth. The motto of the country is Satyamev Jayate (only the truth triumphs). We know it from our minds,” she claimed.
Mrs Gandhi said the ruling dispensation was “playing with” citizens.
“The Prime Minister says Congress is going to steal your money mangalsutras (a reference to the BJP's claim that Congress wants to redistribute wealth). This is incredible. The Congress was in power for 55 years. Did it steal your gold or… mangalsutrasshe asked the gathering.
Mrs Gandhi said she had visited Korba (in neighboring BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh) where land had been transferred from the poor for mining.
