The Supreme Court Collegium on Wednesday recommended the appointment of seven different judges as chief justices of seven separate High Courts.
The Collegium recommended the names for the High Courts of Bombay, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Orissa and Kerala.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna made these recommendations at a collegium meeting on Wednesday.
If the name is approved by the centre, Gujarat HC will have a female Chief Justice as Collegium has proposed Judge Sunita Agarwal as Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court.
Once appointed, she would be the only female chief justice of a Supreme Court, as there is currently no woman representing the same post.
SC Collegium has recommended Allahabad Supreme Court Judge Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
The collegium also recommended the appointment of Judge Alok Aradhe, Judge, Supreme Court of Karnataka (Parent HC: Madhya Pradesh) as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for Telangana State.
For the Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, the collegium has recommended the appointment of Judge Dhiraj Singh Thakur, Judge, Bombay High Court [Parent HC: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh].
Justice Siddharth Mridul, Judge, Delhi High Court has been recommended by the collegium as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
SC Collegium also recommended the appointment of Judge Subhasis Talapatra, Judge,
Supreme Court of Orissa (Parent HC: Tripura) as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Orissa.
Judge Ashish J Desai, Judge, High Court of Gujarat has been recommended by the collegium as Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala.
The Collegium said that these judges are fit and suitable in all respects to be appointed as chief justices of the various High Courts and therefore decides to recommend their appointment.
Justice Sunita Agarwal was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Judicature in Allahabad on 21 November 2011 and is now the senior Puisne Judge in her parents’ High Court. She has been working there since her exaltation and has more than 11 years of experience serving justice in the country’s largest Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court in Allahabad is the largest Supreme Court in the country. Upon the appointment of Judge Sunita Agarwal, the Allahabad High Court would have a second Chief Justice among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.
According to the resolution, when considering the name of Justice Sunita Agarwal, the Collegium took into account the fact that she would be the only female Chief Justice of a Supreme Court, as there are currently no women among Supreme Court Chief Justices.
Justice Siddharth Mridul was appointed as a Judge of the Delhi High Court on 13 March 2008 and has served as the senior Puisne Justice in the Supreme Court of his parent.
Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in Allahabad on 21 November 2011 and is now a senior puisne judge in the Supreme Court of his parent company. He has been working there since his tenure and has more than 11 years of experience as a bailiff in the country’s largest Supreme Court.
With the appointment of Judge Upadhyaya, the Supreme Court in Allahabad, the largest Supreme Court with a total strength of 160 judges, would be adequately represented among the chief justices of the high courts, the collegium said.
