Incessant rain and snowfall have led to landslides and flash floods in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, causing damage to public infrastructure and private properties. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed today due to landslides at several places along the highway. A large number of vehicles are stranded along the highway.
Video showed rocks and debris sliding down a mountainside and falling onto the highway.
The highway, the only road connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country in all weather conditions, was blocked by landslides at Mehar, Gangroo, Mom Passi and Kishtwari Pather in Ramban district.
The rain continues, hampering restoration work, officials say. They are advising commuters to avoid traveling on the highway until it is cleared of debris.
Kupwara district in north Kashmir was cut off from the rest of the valley as water inundated roads. Several villages have also been affected by flooding.
In Ramban district, a 13-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a boulder following a landslide.
In Boniyar area of Baramulla district, seven members of a family were injured after their house collapsed due to landslides.
All schools in Kashmir will remain closed tomorrow due to incessant rains, flash floods and landslides in several areas.
Kashmir University has postponed exams scheduled for tomorrow.
