New Delhi:
Water from the Yamuna entered Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial at Rajghat in Delhi, flooding the lawns and paths, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti deputy chairman Vijay Goel said today.
Goel said the floodwaters rose to the entrance of the memorial complex and later flooded the paths leading to the marble platform where Gandhi was cremated.
“However, the water just touched the lower part of the marble platform and the flame on top was unaffected,” he told PTI.
Footage from Rajghat showed water flowing on the ring road and entering the monument.
Goel said that part of the wall of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti collapsed under the pressure of the water.
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told reporters that the flooding at Rajghat was due to the backflow of a drain in the area.
A PTI video showed the monument’s paths and lawns being inundated by waist-deep water.
Built in memory of Mahatma Gandhi on the west bank of the Yamuna in Delhi, Rajghat measures 44.35 hectares. The monument is a square stone platform in black marble.
The memorial is built on the site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated after his assassination on January 30, 1948 at Birla House in Delhi.
