Constipation is considered one of the most common digestive disorders that many people suffer from time and time again. It is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week. If the stools or feces become harder after three days and you have to apply a lot of pressure, this can be a common indicator of constipation. It often results in extreme pain and a constant feeling of a full stomach. If left untreated, it can become chronic constipation, which can lead to anal fissures and even colon cancer.
Dr. Srihari Anikhindi, consultant at the Institute of Gastroenterology and Pancreaticobiliary Sciences at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, has provided a detailed guide on the causes and ways to prevent constipation.
Causes
According to Dr Anikhindi, “The main reason for constipation is lack of water in the body and less access to fiber in the stomach. Since a lot of water is needed to make the contents of the stool, the amount of fiber is also necessary. If both things are less in the diet, they become the cause of constipation.
The doctor further added that constipation has become a bigger problem due to poor nutrition in our daily lifestyle. Less consumption of salad, fruit, and water, along with large amounts of processed foods, all lead to constipation.
Relationship between constipation and metabolism
Dr. Srihari Anikhindi also emphasizes the importance of proper metabolism to combat constipation. According to him, stimulating the metabolism is important to get rid of constipation. Metabolism varies from person to person. People with a good metabolism will be able to digest and absorb food better, in contrast to people with a poor metabolism.
How to get rid of constipation?
The doctor advises people suffering from constipation to exercise. Regular exercise or yoga is a great way to improve blood circulation and keep constipation at bay. Consuming fiber rich foods like legumes, fruits, walnuts, dates and almonds among others are some of the other ways to get rid of constipation.
If home remedies prove ineffective, Dr. Anikhindi suggests using laxatives to thin your stool. If none of the methods work, the doctor recommends seeing a doctor immediately, as constipation can lead to other serious problems.
Prevention
For people with a good metabolism, Dr. Srihari recommends that they drink at least 2-3 liters of water every day, eat plenty of fruits and green leafy vegetables and spend at least 30 minutes exercising.
