Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims fast for one month. The fasting period during the holy month of Ramadan ends with the grand celebrations on Eid-ul-Fitr. It is believed that the Holy Quran was revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad in this month.

The holy month of Ramadan has already started and some healthy dishes are made every day for the iftar meal. A special dish made with Vermicelli known as Shahi Lachha is widely sold in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Prepared by a candy shop, this sweet dish has become all the rage in the city.

Speaking to News18 Hindi, the owner of the restaurant, Abul Khan, said that this Sewai Lachha is commonly known as Shahi Lachha and they start preparing it 10 days before Ramadan. They finish their work two days before Ramadan.
“There are 10 to 12 employees here, who come from Bihar and make Shahi Laccha. In retail, we sell it for around Rs 200 per kilo,” Khan said.
One of the workers named Yunus Ansari said that about two quintals of flour are used every day to prepare this. He also shared the method of making this mouth-watering Shahi Lachha. Yunus stated that they knead the dough with water first. Then a good amount of ghee is added so that they do not stick together.
Yunus said that for two quintals of flour dough, four cans of oil and 50 kg of ghee are consumed daily to make the delicious Lachha Sewai. He works as a cook (Halwai) in the Hooghly district of West Bengal all year round and comes back to Dhanbad 10 days before Ramadan to make this special Lachha. During the holy month, he works here and visits his family a few days before Eid. After the festivities, he goes back to work in Kolkata.
