Covid-19 has caused significant damage to people worldwide. People have lost jobs, loved ones, suffered financial losses, suffered ill health, become isolated, incarcerated and the list of miseries is endless. Cases of depression, anxiety among health and frontline workers, students, children, adults (living alone or with sick patients, with pre-existing mental illnesses) have increased significantly as a result.
Therefore, in such strenuous circumstances, it has become all the more urgent to look for ways to deal with psychological problems.
On this World Mental Health Day, let’s take a look at some of the ways we can manage our mental health:
Run a worry drop
Keep a journal to write down your fears and happy incidents. Keep writing to track progress – how long were you anxious, when it was reduced; also follow your luck.
Choose a new schedule, take it easy
Make room for a fresh, customized schedule that also includes cancellations. Adjustment takes time. Remember that the cognitive and emotional load must be handled with care. To ensure our emotional well-being, it is necessary to embrace the possibilities of change that are beyond our control. Focus on what we can control, such as health, fitness and taking precautions.
Manage Stress Threshold
Prioritize your mental health by building a solid foundation that revolves around:
i. Exercises: ensure a better night’s sleep, mental rest and less stress.
ii. Sleep Hygiene: Don’t look at cellphones, TV, or laptops 30 minutes before bedtime.
iii. Clean eating: Avoid junk food, overeating or not eating, regardless of whether you feel low or not.
iV. Meditate: Include at least 10 minutes of meditation in your daily routine as it improves mental health.
Stay connected
While we should maintain social distancing, that doesn’t mean we should be emotionally distant as well. Hold virtual meetings, video calls and stay in touch with your loved ones. Know that it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed during these difficult times.
