The central idea behind the Netflix sci-fi adventure “The Adam Project” is presented in this comedic, yet tender living room scene.
12-year-old Adam (Walker Scobell) interrogates a strange man (Ryan Reynolds) he found in the shed behind his house. They have the same mannerisms, the man knows the name of the child’s dog (Hawking) and they both wear the same watch. Could it be earlier and future versions of each other?
“I wanted this scene to portray not only the premise of the film,” said director Shawn Levy, “but in a way that would essentially make a pact with the audience on the tone that this film would have a slightly flowing, mixed tone that oscillates between comedy and poignancy.”
In the series, Scobell has to mimic Reynold’s mannerisms. Levy said it was easy for the young actor, who is making his film debut.
“When we cast Walker, we knew we had found this revelation that had never done anything before, and we knew the kid was smart, authentic and talented,” Levy said. What we didn’t know is that he’s been watching the ‘Deadpool’ movies since he was seven, so he shows up on set and plays alongside his hero, whose rhythms and inflections he’s literally swallowed half of his life. very young life, so we never had to teach Walker how to say and do things the ‘Ryan Reynolds way.’ He already knew how.”
