While flying on the surface of the moon, the Chandrayaan-3 rover ran into an obstacle on Sunday when it encountered a crater 4 meters in diameter. In an update, the space agency ISRO announced that the crater was 3 meters in front of its location. ISRO then decided to order the Rover to follow the path and informed that the Rover was now safely on its way to a new path.
Last week, India made history when ISRO successfully landed Chandrayaan-3 on the lunar surface’s south pole. This achievement is significant because India is the first country to successfully land on the far side of the moon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, away for the 15th summit, visited the ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network Mission Control Complex on Saturday and stressed that ISRO’s scientists had successfully expanded the ‘Make in India’ initiative to reach the lunar landscape.
“Today I experience a different level of happiness… such occasions are very rare… this time I was so restless… I was in South Africa but my thoughts were with you,” said Prime Minister Modi.
Prime Minister Modi has also announced that India will celebrate August 23 as ‘National Space Day’ to mark the successful landing of the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s lander.
Everything works fine for Chandrayaan-3: ISRO chief
ISRO regularly shares updates on the Chandrayaan-3 mission as the mission is currently within its critical 14-day window. “Everything works very well. Chandrayaan3, the lander, the rover is very healthy and all five instruments on board are turned on. And it’s now yielding beautiful data. So we hope that in the next 10 days, another 10 days before September 3, we can complete all the experiments with the full capacity of different modes,” said ISRO chief S Somanath.
“There are different modes for which it should be tested. So we have the best picture ever of the moon,” he said.
