With several parts of India experiencing heat waves, the risk of heatstroke or related diseases is increasing. Earlier on May 3, it was also reported that hospitals across India are seeing an unprecedented increase in patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, with experts warning that these numbers could increase in the coming days as severe heatwaves continue to sweep through the country. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has also created a digital platform to record cases and deaths due to heatstroke. Doctors at 120 government hospitals in 21 states will now upload data directly to the platform to help public health policymakers make informed decisions, according to people familiar with the matter.
Here are some first aid measures if you/someone feel dizzy or uncomfortable due to heat wave
The Ministry of Health has listed first aid measures that will help people know when someone is feeling dizzy or uncomfortable.
1. Drink water to rehydrate.
2. Loosen clothing if possible
3. Immediately move to a cooler place
4. Place a sponge or cloth soaked in water on your forehead. Additionally, you can apply ice to your forehead, neck, and wrists to cool your body.
5. If someone is unconscious, do not force feed or give water.
6. The ministry has also indicated that if the complaints persist, you should go to the nearest hospital or call an ambulance.
Here are some signs of heat stroke in children that you should know about
1. Refusal of food
2. Excessive irritability
3. Decreased urine production
4. Dry oral mucosa and absence of tears/sunken eyes.
5. Lethargy or altered sensorium
6. Seizures
7. Bleeding anywhere
Signs of Heat Stroke in Adults:
The Ministry of Health has also listed eight signs of heat stroke in adults. They are:
1. Altered mental sensorium
2. Hot, red and dry skin
3. High body temperature
4. Severe headache
5. Anxiety, dizziness, fainting and lightheadedness
6. Muscle weakness and cramps
7. Nausea and vomiting
8. Rapid heat stroke.
IMD heat wave forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heatwave conditions in isolated areas over Saurashtra & Kutch and Gujarat region during the next five days. .over, the weather bureau also forecast heatwave conditions in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Interior Karnataka on May 7; over western Rajasthan from May 7 to 10; over East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh from May 8 to 10. IMD also stated that hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail in isolated areas over Kerala and Mahe and Coastal Karnataka over the next three days. Notably, the weather bureau also added that heatwave conditions are likely to ease in the eastern and southern peninsular regions of the country as the region is likely to experience a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms until May 10.
