The Indian cricket team’s batting lineup has shown a clear trend after two Asian Cup matches. Suryakumar Yadav, currently world No. 3 in ICC T20I batter rankings, comes to bat at number 4, while former captain Virat Kohli comes in at number 3. However, according to recent form, Suryakumar has shown much more ability to speed up the innings than Kohli. Even former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir thinks Suryakumar should be played on the number three spot.
“Look, I have a reason behind it. The reason is you don’t play with someone’s form just because you want someone else to get back in shape. He was incredible in England when everyone was struggling. He was brilliant in the West Also India. He’s also 30. He’s not like 21, 22,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
“He doesn’t have much time left. Let him bat at number 3, make the most of his form and Virat Kohli, he has so much experience, he can still come batting at number 4. Depending on the situation too. Personally, I think that Surya has to play at number 3 from now until the World Cup and see how the results will be.”
In Wednesday’s game against Hong Kong, Suryakumar made a late foray in the Indian innings after the top-three batters gave India a slow start. He has been India’s leading hitter in the shortest format for the past few months and will be a crucial cog for the team at the 2022 T20 World Cup, which starts in two months.
