India's Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden lost their round of 16 men's doubles match to Croatia's Mate Pavic and El Salvador's Marcelo Arevalo at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday. They lost 3-6 6-7 (6-8). Bopanna and Ebden quickly fell behind in the first set and were unable to recover afterwards. The Indo-Australian combo looked to be making a comeback of sorts in the second set but their opponents played very well to seal the deal in the tiebreak.
Nagal match suspended due to rain
Indian tennis ace Sumit Nagal was in his men's singles second round match against Denmark's Holger Rune when rain led to a suspension of the match.
Unseeded Nagal lost the first set 3-6 and was trailing 1-2 against seventh seed Rune when the heavens opened.
Holger dominated the match until the rain delay.
The 36-year-old Nagal came into the match having been in excellent form.
On the clay court of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, he first humiliated the eighth seed Flavio Cobolli in the qualifying match, and then the third seed Facundo Diaz Acosto to reach the main draw of the prestigious tournament.
India's singles standard-bearer stunned Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the first round with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
On Monday, Nagal became the first Indian to win a main draw match at the Monte Carlo Masters after defeating world number 38 Arnaldi of Italy in the opening round.
Nagal also became the first from the country to win a main draw match at any of the three Masters 1000 events – the series that began in 1990 – on clay.
After recently achieving a career-high ranking of No. 93 in the ATP rankings, Nagal has become only the third Indian to play in the main draw in Monaco, joining the legendary Vijay Amritraj (in 1977) and Ramesh Krishnan (in 1982 ).
