Joe Root played the role of anchor for England on the opening day of the first Ashes Test which kicked off on Friday in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Host skipper Ben Stokes won the coin toss and batted first. England were losing wickets at regular intervals, but a solid partnership between Root and Jonny Bairstow for the sixth wicket put the side in control against Australia. The surface on offer for the game is a batting paradise and Root barely left a chance to score on opening day.
Root’s dominance with the bat on the opening day was so good that he even hit a reverse first for a six that also hit the bowling of right-handed Australian pacer Scott Boland.
Boland tossed a fuller ball out of stump and Root sent it over the third man’s fence for a six.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has predicted that batters like Root, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne will get runs in the Ashes series.
“We have three of the best batsmen in world cricket in the series in Joe Root, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Sorry to be on the fence but I think they will get all three points,” Hussain told Sky Sports. ANI.
Under the captaincy of Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, England have played a new kind of cricket.
“I don’t think there will be many draws – England haven’t drawn in 12 Tests under Brendon McCullum,” he added.
