India star Mohammed Siraj, who is currently playing in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore, has reported a “corrupt approach” by BCCI’s Anti Corruption Unit (ACU). Sources told DailyExpertNews that an unidentified man, alleged to be a driver, was seeking inside information from Siraj on RCB. The BCCI has a strict code of conduct when it comes to tackling corruption. If a player or an official fails to report a corrupt approach, they may also be penalized.
“It is recognized that the fight against corruption requires immediate reporting of all such approaches and that any undue delay in doing so could undermine the effectiveness with which the ACU BCCI and other relevant anti-corruption agencies are able to protect the integrity of the sport. there was an ‘unnecessary delay’ will in any case depend on itself
circumstances, but it is always unacceptable (and therefore constitutes an ‘unnecessary delay’) for a contestant to wait until after the competition to which he/she was invited to engage in corrupt conduct before reporting such conduct to the ACU BCCI,” says the BCCI’s anti-corruption code.
According to a report in the PTI, the unknown man wanted inside news about Siraj’s team after losing a lot of money in a previous IPL game. The Indian pacemaker was called and immediately reported the matter to ACU officials. “It was not a bookmaker who approached Siraj. It is a driver from Hyderabad who is addicted to betting on matches. He had lost a huge amount of money and approached Siraj for inside information.
“Siraj immediately reported the approach. Law enforcement authorities have apprehended the man. More details are awaited,” a senior BCCI source familiar with development told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Since S Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila along with former CSK team boss Gurunath Meiyappan were arrested on mock-fixing charges, the BCCI had strengthened its ACU work. Each team has a dedicated ACU officer who stays in the same hotel and monitors all movements on the ground.
There is also a mandatory ACU workshop for players on do’s and don’ts and if a player fails to report a corrupt approach there are penalties. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was suspended in 2021 for failing to report a corrupt approach during his IPL stint in the previous season.
