Kane Williamson remains hopeful that he will take part in the ODI World Cup in India later this year as he continues to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered during the IPL. New Zealand’s limited overs captain had torn his ACL while playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL opener against Chennai Super Kings on 31 March. Williamson doesn’t look too far ahead and evaluates his recovery weekly. The ICC event is played in October-November.
“I’m just trying to keep it week-to-week at the moment. I’ve never had such a long-term injury, but talking to other people who have, the journey is a bit long, so if you’re looking too way ahead, it could probably get a little daunting,” Williamson told ESPNcricinfo.com on Monday.
“As you tick off those little markers week by week, those little wins that are fun to experience. But also knowing that the journey isn’t going to be completely smooth and you’ll have a few setbacks along the way that you’ll need to navigate.” Williamson had played a vital role in New Zealand’s campaign in the 2015 and 2019 editions as they reached consecutive finals.
“Probably more for sanity and switching things up… just fun mixing up all the gym work and the physio work and rehab specific stuff to spend some time with some of the other guys working out. Super excited to be back for sure in the nets,” he added.
The 32-year-old is one of the best hitters in the world, with 17142 international runs in various formats. He represented New Zealand in 94 Tests, 161 ODIs and 87 T20 Internationals.
