A proud Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott believes Sunday’s famous victory over defending champions England at the World Cup will encourage more youngsters at home to play cricket. Afghanistan shocked England by 69 runs and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. The win was Afghanistan’s only victory over England in the ODIs. “The players know this victory will put a smile on the faces of those affected at home. This victory will also encourage boys and girls in Afghanistan to pick up a cricket bat or ball,” said Trott, himself a former player from England.
Afghanistan was recently hit by an earthquake that killed more than a thousand people.
“It’s not just cricket that the boys have played, the boys know the meaning of this victory. The boys know what the people at home have been through and are doing their best to help the victims,” Trott said.
Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who played an important role in the victory with his knock of 80 off 57 balls, also said that the victory means a lot to the people back home.
“The victory will give the people of Afghanistan reason to be happy after the disaster. We all know how things are going at home and are doing everything we can to comfort and help them,” Gurbaz said.
