Former all-rounder Ajay Jadeja believes India skipper Rohit Sharma should push himself to the third spot and promote Virat Kohli to the opening position in next month's T20 World Cup in America. India announced their 15th seed for the major tournament earlier this week and will open their campaign against Ireland on June 5. “For me, Virat Kohli starts. Who goes back? Rohit Sharma bats at three. He gets a little cushion and understands the game, he has so much going on in his mind as a captain,” Jadeja told Jio Cinema.
“When you have Virat by your side, you know consistency is all you get, so you might as well use him. He is the best at the top and the powerplay allows him to settle in,” he added to it.
Jadeja backed the selection of a currently anomalous Hardik Pandya in the squad and described him as special.
“The spotlight is on him for obvious reasons. He is a special player, a rare commodity that you find in our country, where someone bowls with the seam to the side and can take the side with his stroke,” said he, referring to the furor caused by his elevation to captain of Mumbai Indians to replace Rohit.
Pandya, who is enduring a poor performance in the IPL, will be Rohit's deputy in the T20 World Cup.
“The squad is out of shape, there's no doubt about that. It depends on how you want to play. It's one of the things I look at this team and think they don't have many options.
“You have established players in the squad, everyone is so solid with the numbers they play and the stadium they play at. It will all depend on what Rohit thinks,” Jadeja said.
