The name ‘Suryakumar Yadav’ is on every fan’s mind after the talisman batsman secured three consecutive first-ball ducks in the ODI series against Australia. For the first few games, Mitchell Starc beat Surya with the left arm, and in the final match it was the left arm spinner, Ashton Agar. Fans, pundits and some former cricketers have wondered what led to such a catastrophic performance from Surya. When Sunil Gavaskar was asked about this, his answer was literally ‘nothing’.
In a chat on Star Sports after the match, Gavaskar was asked about Yadav’s struggles in the series and what went wrong with him. The great Indian said, “Nothing, nothing.”
“He just needs to understand that this can happen to the best players and it has happened to the best players. So I think he just needs to focus now; forget about these 3 games and focus on the IPL. Get runs there. As soon as he gets runs in the IPL, he will come back confidently for the next one-day match,” said Gavaskar.
The batting legend hopes that Surya will turn things around in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season, and hopefully continue the same form after the tournament in the colors of India.
“Well, he was out 3 times at first pitch. It’s very hard to say what goes wrong. Yeah, there were two good pitches that Mitchell Starc threw in the first 2 games. Yeah, he was maybe a little too anxious ,” he continued.
Even India skipper Rohit Sharma was asked about Surya’s struggles in the series at the press conference after the third ODI.
“He (Suryakumar) only played three balls in the series. I don’t know how much you can see in it. He has three good balls,” Rohit had said.
Surya is quite an important player for India and has done wonders for the team in T20Is. With Shreyas Iyer out for an extended period, it becomes even more important for the Indian team to get Surya in top form.
