As Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference approaches, all eyes are on the rumored significant changes coming with the iOS 18 update. WWDC is expected to unveil a major overhaul of the iPhone operating system in June 2024, focusing on artificial intelligence and a range of new software features.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who provides insight into Apple's plans, iOS 18 will see a complete redesign of several popular built-in iPhone apps, including Photos, Mail, Notes, and Fitness. Notably, the Calculator app gets extra features and makes its debut on the iPad, with a long-awaited update for iPad users.
Gurman's insights indicate that iOS 18 may be Apple's most important iPhone update yet, bringing a range of AI-driven improvements. These new features include automatically created playlists on Apple Music and AI-based writing support in Pages and Keynote. A differentiator is Apple's focus on running AI tasks directly on the iPhone, reducing reliance on cloud servers, although some advanced features could be exclusive to the latest iPhone 16 models.
Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, is also about to receive a significant upgrade with AI improvements. Users can expect more natural conversations with Siri, improved Spotlight searches, and improved shortcut automation. Apple's approach to AI technology could include its own major language model or collaboration with other major players such as Google or OpenAI.
One of the most anticipated features in iOS 18 is a new way to customize the Home screen. Users will soon be able to place app icons wherever they want, with room for blank spaces, custom rows or columns, and a more flexible iPhone layout. This could be a welcome change for those looking for a more personalized smartphone experience.
Another possible update in iOS 18 is the adoption of the RCS messaging standard, which bridges the communication gap between iPhone and Android users. RCS Messaging offers enhanced features such as high-resolution photo sharing, enhanced group chats, and read receipts across platforms.
Safari, Apple's browser, could also see AI-powered improvements, potentially integrating a browser assistant similar to existing tools in other browsers. The Calculator app is ready for a refresh, with a history bar for past calculations and improved unit conversion tools. Meanwhile, the Notes app could soon support complex math equations, suitable for both students and professionals.
Apple Maps is ready for improvement, with new topographic maps with elevation data and marked routes. This could be an important addition for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers.
Finally, iOS 18 could bring a “hearing aid mode” to AirPods Pro, possibly building on the existing Conversation Boost feature. Additional updates are expected for CarPlay, Freeform and other applications. However, these details will remain speculative until Apple's official announcement at WWDC 2024.
