Google Pixel Fold, which features a Tensor G2 SoC and a 4,821 mAh battery with 30W wired fast charging, was released earlier this year in May. The company is expected to work on a successor to the device, which is likely to hit the market in 2024. By 2025, the tech giant is also expected to introduce a foldable clamshell device. A report reveals that a smartphone other than the upcoming Pixel 8 series models was recently spotted on an accessory application.
A report from 9to5Google reveals that a new device codenamed ‘comet’ has been spotted in the latest updated version of the Google Pixel Buds application. The list also included models codenamed “Shiba” and “Husky”: the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, respectively. It is speculated that the unknown model could be the Pixel Fold 2 or Pixel Flip. None of these phones have been officially announced yet.
The report deduces that since the codename is not related to a dog breed, it is unlikely that the ‘comet’ model refers to the alleged Pixel 8a handset. According to the report, Pixel 9 models are tipped to get reptilian-based codenames. The future Pixel 9 phones may have code names like ‘Komodo’ and ‘Caiman’.
Notably, the Google Pixel Fold was codenamed ‘Felix’, replacing the original codename ‘passport’ as it fell into the same classification as the Tensor G2-powered Pixel 7 series – where models were codenamed ‘cheetah’ and ‘panther ‘ got.
The report further clarifies that given the relatively new launch of the Pixel Fold handset and also the backend layout of the Pixel Buds application, it is likely that the codenamed “comet” handsets could be Pixel Flip, a foldable clamshell model.
