The model is being developed in collaboration with universities of the Indian Institute of Technology, including in Bombay, supported by Reliance Jio Infocomm and Centre.
The consortium – which includes Reliance and eight affiliated universities – previewed the model at a technology conference in Mumbai. The model – called Hanooman – showed a motorcycle mechanic interacting with the AI bot in Tamil, a banker speaking to the tool in Hindi and a Hyderabad-based developer using the tool to write computer code.
The model will operate through eleven local languages in four areas: healthcare, governance, financial services and education.
The 'Hanooman' model will also offer speech-to-text capabilities, making it much more user-friendly, Bloomberg quoted Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chairman of IIT Bombay's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, as saying on the sidelines of the annual Nasscom IT industry conference.
It is important to know that some other startups like Sarvam and Krutrim, backed by prominent venture capital investors like Lightspeed Venture Partners and billionaire Vinod Khosla's fund, are also working on open-source AI models customized for the country.
The report states that the Reliance Jio plans to build customized models for specific uses. The telecom-to-retail conglomerate is already working on 'Jio Brain', a platform to use AI across a network of around 450 million subscribers.
LLMs are systems that learn from large amounts of data and generate natural-sounding responses. Such models use generative AI, a newer type of artificial intelligence made popular by the success of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
BharatGPT's efforts in this area are somewhat unique: it is the first private-public partnership of its kind in the country, involving major players in diverse fields.
