OpenAI appears to be launching its own search engine, reportedly the ChatGPT search engine. Recent findings from Y Combinator's Hacker News community have revealed that OpenAI has registered a new domain name, 'search.chatgpt.com', along with securing a certificate.
While the URL currently leads to a 'Not Found' message, industry observers speculate that the move signals an impending launch of the ChatGPT-powered search engine, India Today reports.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and former president of Y Combinator, has ties to the venture capital firm, which was one of OpenAI's early investors.
While the current status of the domain doesn't mean much, speculation is rife that the ChatGPT search engine could soon become a reality. AI influencer Pete Huang has hinted at a possible launch date of May 9, a date also reiterated in several other reports.
Rumor has it that the ChatGPT search engine, expected to be a breakthrough product, will combine the functionalities of traditional web search engines such as Google with the capabilities of generative AI such as ChatGPT. Users are expected to receive results that merge AI-generated content with relevant web pages, similar to Perplexity AI. This means users can obtain both a concise AI summary of relevant information from the web as well as direct sources for those looking for more in-depth details.
While Google currently dominates the search engine landscape with a market share of almost 90%, followed closely by Microsoft Bing, the ChatGPT search engine could potentially introduce a new competitor. Unlike a generative AI-powered chatbot like ChatGPT, a search engine could integrate ads, potentially creating a new revenue stream for OpenAI.
The ChatGPT search engine user interface is expected to vary by device. On desktops, web results and AI summaries can appear side by side, while on smartphones they can appear one after the other. A similar interface model can be observed in Microsoft's Copilot, powered by GPT-4 and the Bing search engine.
