There has been a lot of discussion this season about the role of understudies and standbys, which kept many shows going when other artists tested positive for the coronavirus. Can you tell me what your intention is for Sunday on that front?
In three of my six Broadway shows, I was an understudy. And I started in this industry in the ensemble. It’s impossible for a host like me to let this moment pass without acknowledging the swings and understudies, as well as the myriad groups of people who go out of their way to keep this industry going, and that includes stage managers, dance masters, collaborators, hair and make-up departments, musicians. There is no version of the world where I have nothing to back it up. I’m not going to tell you what it is, but what I’m going to tell you is that if it doesn’t happen, you can hold me accountable.
One of the other important developments this season was the passing of Stephen Sondheim. Should we expect that to be recognized?
Well, without him we wouldn’t have the American theater as we know it. So while I won’t tell you what we’re up to, there will be a beautiful moment for the man who is Stephen Sondheim.
Tony Awards: The Best New Musical Nominees
The nominees for 2022. The race for the best new musical at the Tony Awards – traditionally the most financially advantageous award – this year is a broad six-way competition. Here’s a closer look at each nominee:
How has the pandemic affected you?
I’m one of the few actors who’s actually had opportunities – I’m painfully aware of that, and I’m a bit of a survivor debt. But my eyes are very open and I have seen all the challenges my colleagues have faced. It’s one of the reasons I was so passionate about coming back to host the Tonys.
What do you think of how Broadway is doing?
We are taking steps in the right direction. There is work to be done, however. When you look at this crop of nominees, the shows that have hit Broadway this season, steps have been taken toward equality and inclusion. I’m happy to see more faces similar to mine. I’m happy to see that the honorees are more diverse.
What is the impact of the Academy Award? Have vacancies flown in?
I’ve had more opportunities, yes, and I’m very grateful. I remember very well that I didn’t have this chance. I remember very well that I had to work really hard to make people change their mind about my talent or my abilities, and honestly it wasn’t that long ago. Now I feel like my job is to become more critical. I want to create work that can make people feel and hopefully open their minds.
