When three-year-old Saylor Class complained about monsters in her bedroom, her parents dismissed it as a figment of a child's vivid imagination. However, BBC reported that their perspective quickly changed when a beekeeper found tens of thousands of honeybees above the girl's bedroom. Saylor had expressed concerns about “monsters in the wall” of her room in their farmhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Her mother, Ashley Massis Class, and her husband didn't pay much attention to it at first, as they recently watched the Pixar film Monsters, Inc.
“We even gave her a bottle of water and told her it was monster spray so she could spray off all the monsters at night,” Massis Class, a home designer, told the BBC.
But the ploy didn't work, over the next few months Saylor became adamant about the fact that something was in her closet. Soon, her mother began to connect the dots and saw bees gathering in groups in her attic and chimney outside their century-old home. She thought Saylor must have heard the buzzing sound near her bedroom ceiling.
Ms Class contacted the pest control company, who discovered the insects were honeybees, a species that is protected in the US. They later came into contact with a beekeeper who saw the insects moving to the floorboards of the attic, directly above their daughter's bedroom. According to the BBC report, the bees spent eight months building their hive. The beekeeper used a thermal camera to examine the walls in the 3-year-old's bedroom.
“It lit up like Christmas,” Massis Class said.
The beekeeper, now called 'monster hunter' by the relieved child, was amazed by the discovery. The hive reached much deeper into the wall than he had ever encountered before. Following a trail leading to a small hole the size of a coin in an attic vent, he carefully opened the wall to reveal a colossal honeycomb teeming with life.
The beekeeper removed between 55,000 and 65,000 bees and 45kg of honeycomb, the BBC reported.
Ms Class estimates the bees have caused more than $20,000 in damage.
