Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings on Sunday announced that fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana will return to Sri Lanka to continue his recovery from a hamstring injury. Pathirana has been missing from action since playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 28. Pathirana was quite impressive for the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side and his absence marks a major setback for the side who are looking for an IPL 2024 playoff berth. “Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will return to Sri Lanka for further recovery. Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a speedy recovery,” CSK said in a statement on Sunday.
The IPL 2024 will see CSK battling for the play-off spots and a win against Punjab Kings on Sunday will be a huge step forward for them in the race.
“We've just stuck to our process and done little things well. We don't look at the opposition's track record, we focus on ourselves and see what we can do well. This season there have been a lot of injuries, flu and forced substitutions, so we have had to tinker with our team. I would say we have lost 10 throws but winning five games is positive in Fizz's place,” CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said.
On the other hand, Punjab Kings emerged victorious when these two teams faced each other earlier in the competition and they will also look to add another win to their name and increase their Top 4 chances.
“We're going to bowl. Day game, try to see how it plays and chase it. We've got the same team. We've had two really good wins with the same team. The conditions have to be pretty similar all the time, it's about batting, bowling and good fielding,” said PBKS deputy Sam Curran at the toss.
