LeBron James is the second NBA player in history to pass 38,000 career points, edging closer to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time record.
James passed the milestone with a mid-range jumper in the first quarter, then scored 35 points in Sunday’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 38-year-old needed just 11 points to break the 38,000 mark and is now 363 points off tying Abdul-Jabbar’s record.
The personal award did James little good, however, as the Lakers lost a close game 113-112.
“It’s just frustrating to get into those positions and not come out with a win,” James told reporters after the Lakers’ third straight loss.
Joel Embiid had the highest scoring for the 76ers—finishing the night with 35 points and 11 rebounds—while James Harden had 24 points and 13 assists.
The Lakers felt sad they hadn’t gotten a foul late, with Russell Westbrook claiming that Embiid had caught his arm when he tried to shoot.
“[I was] trying to attack, trying to get to the basket. It’s a pity, but he grabbed my wrist.” Westbook told reporters. “I couldn’t get the ball up. It’s all good, we’ll look at it tomorrow or tonight.”
The Lakers will face the Houston Rockets on Monday as they try to end their losing streak, while the 76ers, who now have four wins from their past five games, will play the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.
