Mangaluru:
A groom became embroiled in controversy after his wedding invitation sparked debate about his political beliefs, police said Monday.
The Uppinangady police in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada responded to a complaint filed by officials monitoring election code enforcement.
The center of the discussion was the slogan on the wedding invitation. “The best gift you can give the couple is to re-elect Modi as Prime Minister,” it said.
According to police, one of the groom's relatives filed a complaint with the Election Commission over the slogan.
Based on the complaint, Election Commission officials visited the groom's residence in Puttur Taluk on April 14. The groom explained that the invitations were printed on March 1, before the election dates were announced. He also clarified that the slogan expresses admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and concern for the nation. The wedding took place on April 18.
Despite the groom's explanation, EC filed a complaint with the Uppinangady police on April 26, following which an FIR was registered.
Moreover, the press owner responsible for printing the invitation is also under the scanner of the EC and the police.
