IPL 2024: Virat Kohli talks to the umpires after being given out.© AFP
The one most talked about incident in the IPL since Sunday is Virat Kohli's dismissal at Harshit Rana's bowling alley in Calcutta. In a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, Kohli was caught and bowled by Harshit Rana. There is great uncertainty as to whether the ball was legal or not. Kohli was convinced that the full toss was a no-ball and the former RCB captain even expressed his frustration by shouting at the umpire. Kohli was fined 50 percent of his match fee after the act.
Although Kohli went for review, the replays showed that the ball was descending and since Kohli was standing outside his crease, the ball would have eventually settled below his waist had he been in his normal batting position.
After the incident, former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif took to Instagram to slam the umpire in IPL 2024.
“A clear, unplayable beamer gets Kohli out and a ball passing under Dhoni's bat is declared wide. Cameras, replays, technology, but mistakes like this still happen. Bad umpiring,” he wrote in an post on Instagram. The post was also appreciated by Virat Kohli.
Commenting on Virat Kohli's punishment for showing dissent, the IPL said in a press release: “Mr Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined 50 percent of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024.
“Kohli committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted the offense and accepted the match referee's sanction. For Level 1 Code of Conduct breaches, the match referee's decision is final and binding.”
